The growing value of group intelligence.

The last few months have seen some fascinating studies and discussions on the intelligence of groups and how it contributes to team creativity and problem solving.

In January, Leslie Brokaw posted a blog on the MIT Sloan Management Review titled “Madness of Crowd or Wisdom of Groups“. The article points to some very interesting research in the area. For one,  a paper published in Science back in October, concluded that “group intelligence” correlated less with the  intelligence of group members and more with other factors like social sensitivity of the participants, equality in discussion and also the number of women participants. Point to note that the study focused on small groups of 2-5 members drawn from nearly 700 participants. It’s likely that studies with larger groups are also under way.

Further a Boston Globe Story referred to in the article highlighted an even more interesting point - the researchers found that ”group intelligence” in itself has been a rarely studied subject. This appears remarkable in the online world of today where collaboration from small to large groups is being greatly accelerated across boundaries of time, geography and even organizations. Understanding ‘group intelligence’ could help foster new productivities from social network dynamics, for example.

How does Groofer foster group intelligence?

We at Groofer are keenly interested in this topic – because we have seen the collective intelligence at work as an information filter in our own experiments. In fact, with the exploding volume of information overload, human group collaboration (on top of semantic search and filtering) may be one of the attractive ways to make sense of the firehose. This can start small from, say, a research team in an organization working together on an information stream with each person’s interaction with that information – explicit or implicit in the workflow - contributing to create a prioritization and filtering for the entire group.

In this way, while everybody can see all the information that they want, to save time they can choose to see what’s being prioritized by the collective intelligence. How we collect and aggregate these group interactions in a massively social world is our focus and the subject of our work.
